The Spring Color Season: Palette, Colors and Makeup

The spring color season is a warm and fresh coloring: skin with a golden or peachy undertone, hair with a sunny, golden cast and a bright, radiant complexion. Springs glow in clear, luminous, warm colors and get dimmed by heavy, muted and cool shades.

Spring is the most radiant of the four seasons. Women with spring coloring look as if they are always lightly sun-kissed: the skin tans golden and the hair catches warm glints in the light. Paradoxically, many springs dress in black and cool pastels, which strip away that natural energy.

In the 12 season system, spring splits into three subtypes: light spring, warm spring and bright spring. All share a warm undertone; what separates them is the dominant trait: lightness, warmth or clarity of color. Telling the subtypes apart by eye is hard, which is why a photo analysis works best.

The 3 spring subtypes: light, warm, bright

Light spring is the most delicate and luminous, warm spring has the most golden, sunny coloring, and bright spring carries the clearest, most vivid colors. The dominant trait of your coloring decides the subtype, and it is best measured from a photo.

How to recognize a spring

Hair
From sunny blonde through honey to golden or reddish brown. A warm, golden shine is always visible in the light.
Eyes
Most often green, warm hazel, light blue with a warm glint, or amber. Usually light and bright.
Skin
Warm undertone: golden, peachy or ivory. Tans easily to a golden brown; blush reads as peach.
Contrast
Low to medium, but fresh and luminous. The overall impression is light and warm.

Colors to avoid

Cool and muted colors smother a spring's natural warmth: the complexion turns gray next to them and loses its glow.

Spring makeup colors

Spring makeup should add freshness, not cover it up. Peaches, corals and warm browns instead of cool pinks and grays. The result should look radiant and light.

Spring hair colors

Spring hair should stay in the family of warm, sunny shades: honey, caramel, golden blonde. The biggest mistake is cool, ashy dye and platinum, which dim the whole face.

Outfit formulas

1Cream white instead of snow white: the base of a spring wardrobe is ecru, vanilla and warm beige.
2A coral dress or blouse near the face: an instant healthy, rested-skin effect.
3Warm turquoise with sandy gold: a vacation pairing that works all year round.
4Instead of a black blazer: warm navy, caramel or chocolate brown.

Frequently asked questions about the spring season

What colors suit a spring color season?
Warm and clear colors: coral, peach, golden yellow, warm turquoise, fresh green, cream white and light caramel. Colors should be luminous and light, with no gray in them.
Is the spring season warm or cool?
Warm. Spring skin has a golden or peachy undertone, so gold suits it more than silver, and warm colors bring the face to life instead of dimming it.
Am I a spring or an autumn?
Both seasons are warm, but spring is light and fresh while autumn is deep and earthy. Clear corals and turquoises light a spring up; an autumn looks better in rust, olive and mustard. When in doubt, a photo analysis settles it.
Can a spring wear black?
Black is the hardest color for a spring: it hardens the features and kills the glow. Chocolate brown, warm navy or deep green work much better; save black for accessories.
What hair color suits a spring?
Warm, sunny shades: golden blonde, honey, light caramel, strawberry blonde and golden brown. Avoid platinum, ashy shades and blue black, which extinguish the golden undertone.
What is the difference between light, warm and bright spring?
All three are warm. Light spring is dominated by lightness (sunlit pastels), warm spring by warmth (the most golden palette), and bright spring by clarity (the most vivid, saturated colors of the three).
